COVID VACCINES

The next group of patients to be vaccinated with their first Covid dose of vaccine will be the under 65s “at risk” group who have not already had their first dose.  Those who are deemed to be at risk is not decided by the practice, it is a national formula designed to highlight all those at risk from increased danger if they should catch the Covid virus.  It is not the same as the criteria used for flu vaccinations.

To qualify as a “carer”, patients either have to be in receipt of carer’s allowance, or be the sole carer for somebody who would be adversely affected should the carer fall ill.

We are only in receipt of the Pfizer vaccination in limited supplies therefore to deliver a safe and effective service people who had had one dose of the Pfizer vaccine should keep to the same vaccine manufacturer and receive a 2nd dose. Unfortunately there is still a limitation on obtaining this vaccine so the group of patients already vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine will be prioritised for their second one so as not to mix and match manufacturers. Therefore, we cannot vaccinate any more patients with a first dose of Pfizer at the moment as there would not be enough supply to give them their second.  The second dose given has to be the same vaccine as the first dose.  So those under 65s at risk who have not already been invited, or have not yet responded to their invitation cannot secure an appointment as yet.

However, supplies of the Astra Zeneca vaccine are speeding up and it is planned that this vaccine will be used going forward.  However, we don’t yet have clinics booked for this vaccine as we don’t know when we will have enough, however, this shouldn’t be too long.  As soon as we have supplies we will be able to book clinics on our system and allocate appointments.

We are not in control of any of this and are having to work within the numbers of different vaccines available, and at the advice of NHSH public health department.

All practices are at different stages of vaccinating due to venues, allocation of vaccine, patient numbers, and staffing, so it is not helpful to compare with friends and neighbours.
