Spirometry Appointments

If you have an appointment with one of our practice nurses for spirometry, please see below for special instructions to ensure the results of the test are accurate.

It is important that you adhere to the following:

  • Do not consume alcohol for at least 4 hours prior to the test
  • Do not eat a substantial meal for at least 2 hours prior to the test
  • No vigorous exercise for at least 30 minutes prior to the test
  • Do not wear tight clothes that may restrict full chest and abdominal expansion
  • Please refrain from taking your inhalers prior to the test. The table below shows you how long before the test you should stop taking them  – this differs per inhaler so look at which one(s) you have and stop accordingly.
If inhalers have had to be taken during the relevant withholding time, please let the nurse know when you come for your appointment and tell her what you took and at what time, so this can be recorded.
